This College for boys from Years 5 to 12 was founded in 1937 and is conducted by Edmund Rice Education Australia. St Pius X College aims to promote the spiritual, academic, social, cultural and physical growth of its students in a Catholic environment. It allows all students the opportunity to experience success as well as providing the challenge necessary for the attainment of excellence.
Facilities: Senior and Junior School resource centres; the Br Leary Learning Centre; five dedicated computing spaces; a number of multimedia centres comprising of home theatre systems, data projectors, interactive whiteboards; a music centre including music recording facilities, piano keyboard lab; gymnasium; weights room; multi-purpose sports pavilion and many other specialist rooms. The sporting and education complex, The Treacy Complex, at Oxford Falls (10 to 15 minutes from the College) is used for a wide range of sports, curriculum-related activities and field studies.
Facilities include four ovals for rugby and football, one turf cricket pitch, one synthetic cricket pitch, four cricket practice nets, two indoor gymnasiums, two tennis courts, large conference room, two lecture rooms, canteen, clinic, commercial kitchen, barbecue facilities and function room.
Electives Years 9 and 10: History, Geography, Commerce, Information and Software Technology, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Italian, Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, Graphics Technology, Physical Activity and Sports Studies. A Mathematics acceleration program is available from the beginning of Year 9. (For an elective to be timetabled it must be chosen by a sufficient number of students.)
Electives Years 11 and 12: In all subjects, all levels are offered. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Senior Science, Ancient History, Modern History, Geography, Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies, Music, Visual Arts, Design and Technology, Drama, Engineering Studies, Industrial Technology, Information Processes and Technology, Software Design and Development, PD/Health/PE, Italian, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Community Languages (Saturday School or Open High School), University Distinction Courses. (For an elective to be timetabled it must be chosen by a sufficient number of students.)
Sport: Cricket, football, rugby, basketball, squash, tennis, athletics, swimming, cross-country running, softball.
Extracurricular activities: A strong emphasis on music, choir, chess, debating, public speaking, robotics, mock trial, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Da Vinci Decathlon, Tournament of Minds, mathematics Olympiad.
Welfare and personal development: There is a strong focus within the College in the context of a shared partnership with parents in the formation and education of their son(s). Elements in the pastoral care network are the Charter of an Edmund Rice school, the Mission Statement, homeroom teachers and guidance co-ordinators, counselling, careers advice, referral system, pastoral care teams, sporting and extracurricular programs, camps, retreats, and excursions, prayer-room groups, parent/teacher nights, peer support program, recognition and reward for achievement, leadership programs. Specialist teachers are available to support students with learning difficulties across curriculum areas from Years 5 to 12. Students are supported through in-class support according to need. Gifted and talented support provides enrichment opportunities on an in-class and/or withdrawal basis. Collaboration with Studies Co-ordinators and classroom teachers as well as curriculum differentiation provides extension opportunities for students. Homework help is available to all students two afternoons a week, after school.
