MacGregor State High School is an Independent Public School situated in the southern suburbs of Brisbane. More than 1400 students attend MacGregor with a wide range of options offered in the three key areas of focus: Academic, Cultural and Sporting. The school uses the “Dimensions of Learning” as a teaching framework to ensure students receive outstanding instruction in their classes, using a common language that can be transferred across all subjects.
The school insists students come “ready to learn” and works closely with all members of our community to develop positive habits for student learning. Its Honours Program provides an opportunity for strong academic students to accelerate their learning and this has now been expanded into Junior Secondary (Years 7, 8 and 9). The school’s unique elective structure in Junior Secondary, where students select some of their subjects, is extremely well received as students truly feel they have a say in their academic journey.
While the focus on academic success will remain unrelenting, the school provides enormous opportunities for students in the areas of Leadership, Cultural and Community events, the Performing Arts and Sport. An holistic education at MacGregor prepares young people for a full and active role as global citizens with the skills, confidence and resilience to live and make a difference in an ever changing world.
Subjects/Electives Years 7 to 10: English, Mathematics, Science, Study of Society and Environment (History/ Geography), Health & Physical Education, Language other than English (Japanese, German, Chinese), Arts and Technology. In Years 7 and 8, students will choose elective subjects from Arts and/or Technology, with extended elective choices in Year 9.
Subjects/Electives Years 11 and 12: Unlike some schools which have set subject choices at set times (fixed blocks), MacGregor builds a timetable around student choices. In recent times, providing each subject has enough student selections to viably run, nearly 90% of our Year 11 students have been able to study their top six subject choices. This also includes students who chose to study a combination of Authority (OP) and Authority Registered (Non-OP) subjects which is not possible in some schools. Currently students have access to thirty-two (32) Authority subjects and thirteen (13) Authority Registered subjects.
For students wishing to pursue a university pathway MacGregor provides a comprehensive tracking and support program. During Years 11 and 12, students complete two full Queensland Core Skill (QCS) practice tests with the results used in one-on-one interviews to provide students with accurate data on their progress. This allows students and parents to set goals and make informed decisions.
