Last term the McDonald College’s Senior Debating Team secured a win in their third round of the Australian National Virtual Debating Competition (ANVDC). Arguing for the Affirmative side, the team made a compelling case in favour of government regulation of the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Facing off against Central West Leadership Academy from Dubbo, the McDonald College team stood out for their clear vision of how AI could be used to benefit society while minimizing potential harm. The adjudicator specifically praised their ability to present a thoughtful and forward-looking model of AI regulation.
The ANVDC format is demanding, with each team having just one hour to prepare their arguments, including 15 minutes for online research. Each speaker is then given seven minutes to present and rebut the opposing team’s points. Despite these challenges, the McDonald College team showcased strong collaboration, critical thinking, and well-developed arguments throughout the debate.
The victory is even more impressive considering the busy term these students have had. Balancing multiple assessments and performances alongside their love for debating, they have continued to bring passion and clarity to every competition.
In addition to their debating success, these students are also heavily involved in the school’s Music and Musical Theatre programs, proving that a strong commitment to both the performing arts and academics can thrive together.
Their win in this round reflects their dedication and ability to engage thoughtfully with complex, real-world issues such as AI regulation, which continues to grow in importance.
