Electives Years 11 and 12: Accounting, Art, Biological Science, Chemistry, English, French, Geography, Graphics, Home Economics, Legal Studies, Mathematics A, Mathematics B, Mathematics C, Modern History, Earth Science, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Early Childhood Practices, English Communication, Hospitality Practices, Practical Art, Recreation Studies, Prevocational Mathematics.
OP Academic Program; this program is for students who are on a pathway for university entrance. They are engaged in study skills, Core Skills Test skills and other programs such as the Queensland Mineral’s & Energy Academy Tertiary Mentor program. This aims to give students the best possible skills to be able to achieve their desired OP to gain them their entrance into university. Vocational Education and Training Certificates area also offered as BSHS is a registered RTO.
School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships (SBT) are also offered to senior students.
Sport: Students regularly represent the Central Highlands, Central Queensland and Queensland regions in various sporting activities organised through the Queensland Secondary State Schools Sports Association. Students competed in the School Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Competitions and the school regularly plays host to State and Regional Carnivals including soccer, swimming, athletics, rugby league and touch football.
Extracurricular activities: Instrumental music program with Symphonic and Stage bands and Vocal Group, school-based 14th Army Cadet Unit, Public speaking competitions including Lions Youth of the Year, Regional Youth Forum “In-the-bin” Film Festival & “Moving Opera”, cultural programs, Vocal Group – Glee Club, Academic Competitions: Australian English, Mathematics, Science and Chemistry, 37th Annual Blackwater Art Show & Exhibition, NAIDOC Week celebrations.
Welfare and personal development: Blackwater SHS is committed to School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support, quality teaching, and inclusive programs, policies and procedures. There is a strong focus on social development with opportunities provided at regular intervals to specifically target these areas, including Year 8 development days & Year 8 development camp, Indigenous Youth Programs, Year 10 Career Education and SET Planning Camp, Leadership Camp Youth Support programs; including bullying prevention programs and sexual health talks, Guidance Officer, Cluster based Chaplain, Community Education Counsellor, Year Level Co-ordinators.
