Galston High School offers its students a safe, caring and productive learning environment within a very supportive community. The school has excellent facilities in a rural, bushland setting and offers a broad curriculum catering for the needs of students.
Facilities: The school has five computer rooms and is networked for the Internet. It also has a computerised library, extensive sporting facilities, agricultural facilities, music rooms, and a commercial kitchen.
Electives Years 7 to 10: Music, Drama, Italian, Commerce, Geography, Textiles and Design, French, Visual Arts, Metal and Wood Technics, Agriculture, Film and Video, Food Technology, Technical Drawing.
Electives Years 11 and 12: English, Drama, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Ancient History, Modern History, Earth and Environmental Science, Marine Studies, Italian, Legal Studies, several Computing Studies courses, Business Studies, Agriculture, Horticulture, Music, Visual Arts, Photography, Food Technology, Community and Family Studies and Textiles and Design are offered. Vocational courses in five industry frameworks — Information Technology, Hospitality, Retail Operations, Business Services and Primary Industries are also on offer in addition to a wide range of TAFE courses.
Sport: Competitive — European handball, rugby union, volleyball, water polo, basketball, touch football, netball, softball, cricket, soccer. Recreational — squash, gym, aerobics, swimming, bowling, ice-skating.
Extracurricular activities: Debating, instrumental ensembles, concert and jazz bands, drama and dance, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, cattle club, poultry club and bi-annual stage musical.
Welfare and personal development: A strong student representative council and sports council are operating and the school employs a full-time careers adviser.
Special features: Galston High occupies land once owned by the family proprietors of Waddell Cottage. The original cottage has been retained and fully restored by the history department and is used as a central theme in teaching, as well as for drama group activities.
