Debney Park Secondary College provides a challenging program to a diverse range of students, delivered by an experienced and committed staff. The college values the right of students to complete their education in a safe and caring environment.
Facilities: Students enjoy excellent facilities with the extensive IT resources, including soundhouse@debney, which complements learning across all areas of the curriculum and provides new learning in areas such as animation and music. The college is modern and the grounds have been recently refurbished.
Curriculum: The fundamental philosophy of the school is that “Every child matters”. Years 7 to 9 students are grouped according to need and the program consists of communication, investigation, recreation and design briefs. This model of learning integrates all the traditional Key Learning Areas, but has the benefits of integrating the skills and knowledge to promote depth of learning and is characterised by rich tasks. Students are able to develop strong relationships with small teams of teachers. The Later Years program caters for wide-ranging abilities and learning styles. Programs range from pre-VCE entry, VCE, VET and VCAL courses. Homework support programs are available to all students, free of charge, two afternoons each week. A whole school Literacy program (Years 7 to 12) based on the research and program development of Dr Carol Christensen operates for all students each day.
Extra-curricular activities: Music tuition is available for a range of instruments and there are opportunities for students to learn vocals and band performance. The college offers an extensive sporting and camps program.
Student welfare programs: All students participate in the college welfare program, which focuses on drug education and health promotion. The college offers leadership programs and has a strong and active Student Representative Council. The student welfare co-ordinator and community nurse work closely with managers and mentors to support individual and groups of students with identified needs.
