Canterbury Boys High is a school with a strong history, a proud tradition of 90 years of excellence in boys’ education and an exciting future. The school opened in 1918 but current buildings were erected in 1924 and the façades retained.
Facilities: Three Computer rooms, autonomous learning centre, connected classroom, audio-visual centre in library, arts studio, photographic darkroom facilities. Sporting facilities include playing fields, a gymnasium, fitness centre and basketball courts.
Electives: Curriculum comprises all levels of Mathematics, the Sciences and all major Humanities subjects including Ancient and Modern History, Economics, Business Studies and Geography. Other courses include Engineering Studies, PD/Health/PE, IPT, Work Studies, Visual Arts, Music and Business Services (VET course). Photography is offered at 1-Unit level.
Sport: All traditional sports are offered, with rugby league and soccer being among the most popular.
Extracurricular activities: Chess, debating, Enviro club, fitness, knockout sport, mentoring and leadership, peer tutor reading and photography.
Welfare and personal development: Two ESL teachers, a teacher for students with learning difficulties, a teachers’ aide, Head Teacher Learning Support and three community liaison officers work together to ensure the school’s commitment to being inclusive in providing the best education to all students.
Special features: All levels of ability are catered for. Some classes in certain subjects are streamed or graded. A Homework/Learning Centre is conducted after school in the library on Mondays and Thursdays each week. In 2011 the school is the lucky recipient of laptops donated by Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard as part of Oprah Winfrey’s trip to Australia.
