Galvin Park Secondary College is committed to providing enrichment and extension opportunities to all students. Development of thinking curriculum and learning methods are a vital part of the school’s aims. Initiatives such as double sessions for all classes have allowed for advanced learning opportunities to be achieved throughout the school. Other cutting-edge initiatives include Managed Individual Pathways providing career support to all post-compulsory students and an advocacy and mentoring program in Years 11 and 12 to help students develop career pathways. There are Middle Years literacy and numeracy pilot programs and information and communications technology pilot pods creating computer facilities adjacent to classrooms. The school has an excellent team of teachers, including graduate teachers, bringing new techniques and initiatives into the school curriculum.
Curriculum: The school provides comprehensive curriculum choices for all year levels. Curriculum is developed in the eight Key Learning Areas and is constantly updated to ensure students enjoy the most effective learning strategies. Curriculum initiatives include global classroom capabilities, information and communications technology throughout the learning areas and a Middle Years program aimed at Year 9 students to encourage leadership, organisation and team-building skills. Electives include Fashion and Textiles, Hospitality, Media Studies and Photography. Years 9 and 10 students have the opportunity to be involved in the Victorian Youth Development program in partnership with the County Fire Authority, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and a pre-driver traffic safety course involving on-campus driving experience.
Sport: Sporting activities include swimming, volleyball, netball and athletics, intra-school competitions, state-wide competitions, hikes, canoeing, scuba diving, orienteering and much more.
Extra-curricular activities: Emphasis on extra-curricular activities as part of a rounded curriculum includes music ensemble performances in and outside the school. Drama productions are a large part of school life and aspects of musical development are included in the curriculum for subjects including music and business studies.
Student welfare programs: Focus on student wellbeing and participation enables staff and students to work together to create a cohesive, effective learning environment. The Student Representative Council provides a forum for student issues. Leadership programs and encouragement for effective leadership behaviours promote a responsible, caring student environment.
