The shady grounds of Oak Flats High overlook Lake Illawarra and the Escarpment. The school is within easy walking distance of Shellharbour TAFE and the Shellharbour city centre. The school seeks to identify and develop student and staff potential in a caring, supportive environment.
Facilities: Playing fields, basketball and tennis courts, school hall, agriculture plot, computerised library and modern computer labs.
Electives: The school offers a range of HSC and VET courses and has strong links with TAFE college courses. The school also offers a wide range of junior electives including Computer Studies, a range of Technics subjects and Child Care.
Sport: Access to extensive council sporting facilities has made it possible to offer a large range of sports and recreational activities. Surfing, life-saving and aerobics are among the non-competition options.
Extracurricular activities: The school participates in numerous national competitions (Maths, Science, IT and Geography). It also conducts talent quests, “band days”, operates a radio station for students, a chess club, and an SRC.
Welfare and personal development: Welfare is a significant aspect of school policy. There is a merit award system in operation and a discipline and welfare committee monitors students’ problems and progress. Vocational guidance and work experience are a central part of the curriculum and is supported by the Beacon Foundation. This foundation is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to reduce local youth unemployment by providing co-operation with local businesses.
