After graduating from Trinity last year, Cameron Griffith was awarded a scholarship to the University of Arkansas, following his high performance in Track and Field. In addition to his sporting achievements, Cameron completed an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in 2014, graduating with an exceptional score of 30 (83 ATAR). Cameron commenced his studies at Trinity as a Year 3 student in 2005 and worked hard to excel academically while striving to achieve his sporting goals. His main sporting events were Track and Field and Cross Country, while he also played 1st Volleyball.
Cameron competed at three CAS Track and Field Championships and the inaugural CAS Premiership, and was dual Australian All Schools Champion in 2012 and 2013 for the 800m and 1500m events and the 2014 Australian Cross Country Champion. He also received the Pierre De Coubertin Award in 2014, an annual award appointed by the Australian Olympic Committee to recognise senior secondary students who demonstrate sporting attributes consistent with Olympism.
“Not only has Trinity given me the foundations for university but also lifelong friends, many of whom are staff members. I will always have fond memories of Trinity and acknowledge it as a key factor in developing me into the person I am today,” Cameron states.
Cameron chose to complete the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme, which allowed him to balance his studies with training and perform highly in both areas. As a result, he was offered scholarships to three different universities in the US, including Oklahoma, Villanova and Arkansas. He chose a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Arkansas based on the options of being able to follow Environmental Science, Nutrition or Biomedical Science and will commence his studies there in August. Cameron’s ultimate goal is to become a professional athlete.
Cameron credits his academic and sporting success to the opportunities offered at Trinity and the flexibility and support given by the staff. Trinity Grammar School is the first school in Australasia to be accredited as a World Academy of Sport Athlete Friendly Education Centre – one of only nine IB schools in the world to receive accreditation. The School completed its accreditation visit by the World Academy of Sport in 2014, showcasing its impressive sport programme and state of the art facilities.
This accreditation means that from 2016 Trinity will be able to support the requirements of its future high performing student athletes, such as Cameron, even more effectively by allowing them to gain their IB Diploma over a period of up to four years instead of the normal two years. This will enable these exceptional student athletes to combine their challenging training schedules and commitments with their academic studies.
