Monto State High School is a small stand-alone high school with students travelling from five primary schools in the area including a non-state school.
The school is situated in the second largest area of school grounds in Queensland. It has an extensive farm for the agricultural section, growing crops and raising cattle. There is a full-size oval, indoor sports hall with basketball, netball and volleyball courts, access to tennis courts and other sports facilities. Other facilities include a resource centre, computer labs and computers with internet access in every general classroom.
The school has a Special Education Program to service the school community. Experienced staff work closely with students, staff and parents to build learning opportunities for all students.

Subjects/Electives Years 7 to 10: The Junior Secondary Curriculum has been designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to experience a wide range of subjects in a caring and supportive environment and is based on the Australian National Curriculum and Key Learning Areas.
Year 10 students undertake a curriculum structure that aligns with educational initiatives which incorporate Year 10 in the Senior School. All Year 10 students study English, Maths, Science and History as well as three electives. All subjects studied in Year 10 lead directly into subjects offered in Years 11 and 12, thus giving the students the opportunity to experience the demands of the subject before they commit to it in Year 11 and 12. Year 10 Science, Maths, English and History are based on the Australian curriculum.
Year 10 students are also able to begin school-based Traineeships and Apprenticeships.
Subjects/Electives Years 11 and 12: A wide range of academic and vocational subjects are offered in the senior years so as to cater for all the needs of students. Year 11 and 12 students are able to work a flexible timetable. Students may also undertake TAFE programs, or school-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
Sport: School inter-house competitions in swimming, cross country and athletics.
Extracurricular activities: Monto State High School offers a number of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities and programs for students.
