Subjects/Electives Years 7 to 10: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Health & Physical Education, a Language subject, an Arts elective, a Technology elective.

Subjects/Electives Years 11 and 12: Brisbane State High School has a diverse range of subjects that can be studied in Years 11 and 12. All Year 11 and 12 students study an English subject and a Mathematics subject. They also choose four other subjects from a range of Authority subjects and other subjects.

Sport: Sport is a valued part of State High life and, with the range of extra-curricular activities on offer, all students are strongly encouraged to become involved. The activities usually take place after school or on Saturdays. It is expected that players be committed to the school in order to fulfil commitments in the GPS and QGSSSA competitions. School sporting commitments should take precedence over any other competition. All students are encouraged to attend championship events, for example the Swimming, Rowing, Cross Country and Athletic championships.

Extracurricular activities: Brisbane State High School supports the development of students as responsible, aware and concerned citizens. Extra-curricular activities such as sport, music, drama, dance troupe, instrumental music, school productions, student council, chess and debating provide important and enjoyable learning experiences for students. As such, the extra-curricular program is seen as a desirable complement to classroom activities.

Welfare and personal development: Support services include a Guidance Officers, School Chaplain, School Based Police Officer, School Based Youth Health Nurse, and Religious Instruction.
